Blog posts are a quick and easy way to showcase what we do in the classroom while also keeping parents in the loop about what is going on when their children are at school. It is also a fun way of allowing parents and students to show off their work to relatives or friends who may not be able to make it to a classroom open house. The teachers at Pacific University's Early Learning Community all keep classroom blogs that highlight trips and field studies in order for families and friends to stay up-to-date on what the classes are working on.
Blogs can also be used in lieu of a whiteboard for daily updates on what we did in the classroom, or in tandem, by posting a photo of the whiteboard daily recap. In the interest of maintaining privacy of families and students, blogs are necessarily more vague than personal messages would be.
There are also platforms (such as Bloomz) that allow teachers to communicate directly with parents, schedule conferences, and post more detailed descriptions of what happens each day in class. Because this platform requires parents to log in and is shared only with people the teacher sends invitations to, it protects student privacy in a way that traditional blogs cannot.
